Ray Charles & Milt Jackson’s “Soul Brothers”
The rare opportunity to hear Milt Jackson step out from behind his familiar vibraphones to play piano, and partner Ray Charles, in addition to manning the 88s, blow on the alto saxophone for two numbers, shouldn’t be missed. Particularly on this LP, which portrays the 1957 collaboration within a huge, naturally vibrant soundstage. Mastered from the original master tapes and press on 180 gram vinyl, this edition lays bare the relaxed, bluesy, often-boppish jazz on display from these two giants. With stellar support, the two headliners treat this affair as a backroom woodshedding session.
Jim Hall’s “Concierto”
Concierto has remained in esteemed company ever since its original release in 1975. Issued by Creed Taylor’s CTI imprint, it’s among the most accomplished titles in the label’s history and has always been an audiophile staple. This LP takes the prized record even further. Mastered from original tapes and pressed on 180gram vinyl, it now possesses heightened levels of fluidity, airiness, and presence. The soundstage is immense, and pinpoint instrumental images rest against ink-black backgrounds. Concierto features legendary players Chet Baker and Paul Desmond.
