Adam Green and Kimya Dawson originally crossed paths at an open mic night in Mount Kisco, New York in the early 90s. From there they went on to record a surplus of home recordings with various friends under the moniker The Moldy Peaches, and eventually became staples in the NYC anti-folk scene of the late 90’s / early 2000’s. After several releases that gained traction in the U.S. and UK, the group broke into the mainstream when their song “Anyone Else But You” appeared in the hit indie film “Juno” (2007). Below is a quote from Adam and Kimya about the upcoming release.
Last year, ORG Music asked us if we’d like to reissue our original ‘Moldy Peaches X-Ray’ seven-inch record from 1996, and while we’re at it, did we have any unreleased material from the super old days. We went through ancient tapes and came up with a tracklisting of recordings that paint a picture of The Moldy Peaches first recorded music, back from a time before we had any self confidence, and we thought that nobody would ever hear our music. Adam had just learned how to play the guitar and Kimya was a poet who had never written songs. ORIGIN STORY: 1994-1999 is us having fun experimenting and trying to learn how to be a band. (The record also contains a few re-enactments of songs and poems that never got recorded along the way!)
ADAM: I am a 40 year old man about to release an album of songs from when I was 14 years old. Enjoy it!
KIMYA: We became a “band” and then gradually figured out what to do. I’m so glad we got so much of that stuff from when we were young and raw on tape and I hope hearing where we started from inspires and entertains you. “Follow your star. Play your guitar.”
